PCOS
Understanding Hair Growth
What Is PCOS?
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition that affects 1 out of 10. It can cause irregular periods, acne, weight changes, and one of the most noticeable symptoms: excess or unwanted hair growth.
Why Does PCOS Cause Excess Hair?
PCOS causes the body to produce higher-than-normal levels of androgens. While everyone produces androgens, elevated levels can lead to unwanted hair growth.
Common Hair Growth Patterns
Clients with PCOS often experience hair growth that is thicker, darker, and coarser. Typically appears in areas, including: chin, upper lip, and jawline, neck, sideburns, chest and abdomen.

What to Expect During Treatment
Managing unwanted hair caused by PCOS takes time, consistency, and patience — but permanent results are worth it. Hormone-stimulated hair tends to need more overall treatment time compared to those without. It is important to understand that hormonal fluctuations can trigger new hairs to appear over time.

Time
On average, electrolysis takes between 12 to 24 months of full clearance sessions to complete. As treatment progresses and hair growth decreases, sessions become shorter and are spaced further apart.

What is a Full Clearance?
A “full clearance” means that the entire treatment area is treated during one session, with all visible hairs removed by the end. Please note, a full clearance may not be achieved in one session for several reasons.

What helps?
Clients may benefit from:
Medical treatments (like hormone-regulating medications)
Lifestyle changes (balanced diet, weight management, stress management, exercise)
Consistent hair removal sessions (e.g., every 1–4 weeks initially)
